Alize Cornet

Every week there's a lot happening on the WTA - on the court, off the court, by the numbers, even a few tweets... catch up on it all in this week's WTA Diary.

Match
Unfortunately for Alexandra Cadantu and Alizé Cornet tennis doesn't give out bonus points for time spent on court. If it did, though, both players would be rocketing up the rankings after their second round match in Palermo last week.

In a tournament not lacking in marathon encounters, Cadantu and Cornet were in a league of their own; by the time Cadantu finally converted her sixth match point, the on-court clock had just passed the three hour, 17 minutes mark, making it the WTA's longest match in 2012.

On A Roll
Serena Williams' business is winning tennis matches. And business is good. On Sunday Serena defeated Coco Vandeweghe to defend her Stanford title and take her win-loss record since the start of the clay court season to 28-1.

Desperate Situations
It wasn't all plain sailing for Serena in California, though. Having spent the past fortnight in south west London picking up her fifth Wimbledon title, she had the small matter of jet lag to deal with. So what helped her through the long nights? Desperate Housewives, of course!

"I was hoping to fall back asleep but I didn't," Serena said. "I was crying as always. I love that show. I was wide wake as if I was in Europe still."

Pistol Pete
Who was Marion Bartoli's childhood tennis hero? Mary Pierce? Cédric Pioline? Amélie Mauresmo? Actually, it was Pete Sampras. And this week she got to meet him. In fact, better than that, she got to hit with him.

Funny Old Game
It was a funny old week in Stanford; lucky loser Vandeweghe's run to the final, Sorana Cirstea's six (yes, six) successful challenges in a set and the giant bears hanging around everywhere. No, seriously. Giant bears. In t-shirts. Wearing monocles. Seriously!

Tweet Of The Week
Back to eagle-eyed Sorana and her adventure with Hawk-Eye:

@sorana_cirstea
Packed a good pair of eyes 2day. In 1st set challenged 8 balls & was right on first 5 or 6! love & hate relationship with hawk-eye now!

Happy Birthday, Pam!
Everyone knows it's not good form to reveal a woman's age. But to hell with good form, WTA legend Pam Shriver turned 50 during Wimbledon!
