BASTAD, Sweden - Julia Goerges gained revenge for her defeat to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova last week in Palermo with a one-sided win in the first round of the Sony Swedish Open on Monday.

Twelve months ago Zahlavova Strycova made it all the way to the semifinals in Bastad, but an on-song Goerges ensured there would be no repeat in 2012 as she raced to a 62 62 victory.

"We've played quite a few times now and Barbora is always very tough," Goerges said. "She makes you play a lot of balls and I was really happy with my performance and to come through with the win.

"I've been working really hard recently because it's an important time of year and hopefully I can have a good week here and take it into the rest of the season."

Meeting Goerges next will be defending champion Polona Hercog, who came through a rather tougher first round assignment against Alexandra Panova.

A combination of injury and loss of form saw Hercog arrive in Sweden with just one win to her name since the start of April and when she fell two service breaks behind in the first set she must have feared the worst.

However, a run of five games in a row helped Hercog pinch the set before repeating the trick in the second to complete a 75 75 win.

"I'm really happy to get through this match as I haven't had a great season so far," Hercog said. "Even though I wasn't playing my best, it means a lot after all the problems I've had with injury and form. I just need to try and stay aggressive and not worry about the results too much."

The evening session on Centre Court saw the week's first major upset as Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson defeated No.4 seed Roberta Vinci.

In a match where service holds were something of a rarity, Arvidsson edged a tight first set before staging a rousing comeback in the second to triumph 64 75 and send the crowd home in buoyant mood.

"I'm really excited. It was a great match and a great atmosphere and I just enjoyed every point we played," Arvidsson said. "I was down 2-5 in the second and was a little bit lucky here and there and managed to turn it around, which was really pleasing to do in front of my home crowd."

Elsewhere, there were wins for Anabel Medina Garrigues, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Klara Zakopalova, Tsvetana Pironkova and Shahar Peer.
