BAKU, Azerbaijan - Top seed Ksenia Pervak exited the Baku Cup in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon, when she was stretchered off court after collapsing from heat exhaustion.

On a day when temperatures scaled 100°F, Pervak was forced to retire midway through the final set against Julia Cohen after battling it out on court for three energy-sapping hours.

After splitting the first two sets, a visibly tiring Pervak called for the trainer at 2-1 down in the third before falling to the court at break point down three games later. Unable to continue, Pervak was assisted off court with the help of a stretcher.

Cohen, who was leading 64 36 32 at the time of the retirement, now faces Alla Kudryavtseva in the second round.

Pervak was not the only seed to make a premature exit, with Akgul Amanmuradova and Eva Birnerova both slumping to straight set defeats.

No.7 seed Amanmurdova was left to rue missed opportunities as she lost 63 76(12) to Olga Puchkova in a match where she held four second set points, while No.8 seed Birnerova was outclassed by Magdalena Rybarikova, 61 61.

After Pervak's retirement, Alexandra Panova is now the highest-ranked player left in the draw. She was made to work hard for her place in the second round, though, coming from a break down in the first and then fending off a set point in the second before finally overcoming qualifier Sacha Jones, 75 76(7).

Next up for Panova is Sandra Zaniewska, a 61 76(4) winner over Elina Svitolina. Other players advancing in the Azerbaijani capital included Bojana Jovanovski, Nina Bratchikova and Alberta Brianti, who saw off Lesia Tsurenko, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Zarina Diyas, respectively.
