LONDON, England - Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki broke British hearts on the opening day of the Olympic Tennis event when they staged a stunning comeback to defeat Laura Robson and Heather Watson.

For the best part of an hour, Robson, Watson and the British faithful tightly packed into the cramped surrounds of Court 12 were hoodwinked by that cruelest of emotions: hope. A set and 4-2 to the good, the Brits appeared on the verge of a famous triumph. Then the German revival began.

A run of four unanswered games saw Kerber and Lisicki snatch the second set and create what transpired to be an irreversible shift in momentum. An early break in the third soon followed and shortly after the No.5 seeds closed the match out for a 16 64 63 win.

Kerber and Lisicki were not the only seeds forced to dig themselves out of a first round hole on Saturday, though. The Russian duo of Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova, seeded No.3 in London, also recovered from a slow start before advancing with a 67(5) 63 62 win over Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Alicja Rosolska.

Next up for Kirilenko and Petrova will be Yaroslava Shvedova and Galina Voskoboeva, who raced past Stéphanie Dubois and Aleksandra Wozniak in under an hour, 62 60.

Elsewhere, there were also routine wins for several other leading teams; Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, 2012's form team, cruised past Petra Cetkovska and Lucie Safarova, 62 63, while Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina defeated Jarmila Gajdosova and Anastasia Rodionova, 61 64, and Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez brushed aside Casey Dellacqua and Samantha Stosur, 61 61.
