Despite being outaced 13-1, Larcher de Brito was a 63 36 61 winner over a player 11 years her senior, Mirjana Lucic. She also had to endure a short delay because of temperatures rising to unplayable levels.

"She started picking up her game in the second set, and I kind of slowed down a little bit," Larcher de Brito said. "Then we had that 10-minute break and I managed to regain my composure, cool down a little bit and stay strong in the third. I'm used to the heat because I live in Florida.

"My first serve for some reason didn't want to work today. If I want to keep advancing, I have to stay strong on my second serve."

Also moving on was another teenager, in fact the youngest player in the draw, Eugénie Bouchard. The 18-year-old Canadian came into this event with some confidence, having netted her third ITF Women's Circuit title of the year a week ago in Granby, Canada. She took that form to the WTA level with a 62 76(4) triumph over Karin Knapp. It was her second WTA match win, and interestingly enough, her first came in the first round of this event last year.

There was one upset, with Chang Kai-Chen snapping a 12-match WTA losing streak with a 63 62 defeat of sixth-seeded Iveta Benesova. Benesova had won their two previous encounters in straight sets.

Three young Americans who have had impressive results recently are among those in action Monday. No.7 seed Coco Vandeweghe reached her first career final in Stanford two weeks ago, No.3 seed Sloane Stephens cracked the Top 50 earlier this month, and Melanie Oudin captured her first career title in Birmingham last month.
