Vinci & Wozniak Take Down Serbian Top 2

MONTRÉAL, Canada - A few years ago they led a Serbian charge on the WTA, both reaching No.1 and going deep time and time again at the Grand Slams - but it just wasn't their day at the Rogers Cup on Thursday, as they both went out quietly in straight sets in the second round of the Premier-level tournament.

WTA Live is in Montréal all week - watch it all unfold live!

The No.11-seeded Ivanovic was the first to fall, suffering a 60 60 blowout to Roberta Vinci in 44 minutes. Ivanovic had three game points in the match - one serving at 0-4 in the first set and two more serving 0-2 in the second - but she never converted, and what resulted was her first ever double bagel loss.

"I really struggled to find my rhythm out there. It came as a surprise a little bit because I was practicing really well," Ivanovic said. "I was struggling to find my feet and get two consecutive balls in the court. Against players like Roberta who don't make many errors, it's always going to be tough to win like that.

"When you're down 4-0, 5-0, 6-0, the panic starts to set in. I forced a little bit. It was bad already without that. It was really, really tough for me out there."

Ivanovic was asked whether she has ever had such a tough loss: "Maybe not since I was a junior. I can't remember the last time I had a match like this."

Vinci, who had rallied from 5-1 down in the third set to beat Yanina Wickmayer in the first round, saving match point, was happy and surprised at the result.

"I was very surprised," Vinci said. "It's not easy to win 60 60 against a great player like Ana. I was playing really consistently with a lot of slice - and she doesn't like my slice. I think that was the key. I've played against her a lot of times, and it was strange to play her when she was playing like this."

Vinci scored the second double bagel win of her career, her first also coming at the Rogers Cup, against Nuria Llagostera Vives in Toronto in 2007.

The No.13-seeded Jankovic wasn't double bageled but didn't do too much better, falling to Canadian wildcard Aleksandra Wozniak, 62 63. Jankovic had won all four of their previous meetings but just couldn't grind past the Québécoise; the Serb has now lost her opening match at 12 of her last 16 tournaments.

"It couldn't have been better, to be here in front of the home crowd and make the third round at a big tournament like this," Wozniak said. "I was trying to not give her any rhythm, in fact I was trying to make her make mistakes. I was going for my shots but I was trying to do as few errors as I could at the same time."

Other early winners on Day 3 were Carla Suárez Navarro, who fought back from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits in the third set to upset No.15 seed Sabine Lisicki, 36 63 64, and No.9 seed Marion Bartoli, who rolled past Peng Shuai, 61 63.

"I'm disappointed I lost the first game of the second set. I just let her have it," Bartoli said. "Both of us hit the ball early, so generally speaking our matches don't last too long. But this match I thought I could have finished faster."

Next up for Bartoli is No.5 seed Petra Kvitova, who won her second round match Wednesday. Bartoli has beaten Kvitova in both previous meetings.

"We're certainly not going to have long rallies," Bartoli said. "She likes dictating. I believe the winner will be the one who has the best ratio between unforced errors and winners. If I let her step into the court, it's going to be too tough for me. So I need to hit hard. My serve will be an important factor too."
