US Open Day 3 Preview
Laura Robson

NEW YORK, NY, USA - The second round begins on Wednesday and topping the bill will be a battle of youth versus experience as three-time champion Kim Clijsters faces Laura Robson.

Wednesday, Second Round

Arthur Ashe Stadium
Laura Robson (GBR #89) vs. [23] Kim Clijsters (BEL #25)
Head-to-head:
first meeting
The last time Kim Clijsters lost a match at the US Open, Laura Robson, her second round opponent, was just nine years old. Since then, the Belgian, who will retire at the end of the tournament, has won a staggering 22 matches, picking up three titles in the process. Despite electing against playing a warm-up event, the Belgian looked in good nick in her opener, easing past another talented youngster, Victoria Duval, in straight sets.

Robson, though, is likely to pose a sterner test. After a few years spent struggling with the transition from the junior to pro ranks, this summer the British teenager has finally started to fulfill her potential; a semifinal in Palermo bookended by promising showings at Eastbourne and the Olympics. At this stage of her career, Clijsters is likely to have too much class, although if Robson's penetrating groundstrokes begin to find their range, things could get interesting.

Grandstand
[9] Li Na (CHN #8) vs. Casey Dellacqua (AUS #92)
Head-to-head:
Li leads 3-0
At the start of the summer hardcourt season, most observers would have considered Li Na as nothing more than a unpredictable outsider for the US Open. Two tournaments and nine wins later, and Li has catapulted herself to a place among the pre-tournament favorites.

Next up is Casey Dellacqua, who has also enjoyed a fruitful month or so on the cement, highlighted by a run through qualifying to the semifinals last week in Dallas. Now over the injury problems that have dogged her in recent years, the Australian has the type of game that could frustrate Li if she goes off the boil. However, on recent evidence, that is a big if.

Court 4
Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN #48) vs. [15] Lucie Safarova (CZE #17)
Head-to-head:
Safarova leads 2-1
Another match pitting two in-form players against one another, sees recent Top 20 debutante Lucie Safarova take on Aleksandra Wozniak. Both players like to attack from the baseline and the outcome is likely to be determined by who finds the range on their first-strike strategy first.

Safarova has a narrow edge in the head-to-head record, winning their most recent match earlier this year in Charleston, and enters the contest in buoyant mood on the back of a crushing first round win over Melanie Oudin. Despite losing early in four of her five previous visits to New York, Wozniak will be similarly upbeat after looking equally dominant against Alexandra Cadantu first up.

Around the grounds…
Defending champion Samantha Stosur faces Edina Gallovits-Hall on Louis Armstrong, while Victoria AzarenkaMaria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova will also be looking for a safe passage into the third round.
