NEW YORK, NY, USA - Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova gained revenge for back-to-back defeats earlier this summer by knocking out Venus and Serena Williams in the third round of the US Open doubles on Monday.

The Williamses were the WTA's form team heading into New York, having won their 13th Grand Slam at Wimbledon before picking up a third Olympic gold medal at the same venue a few weeks later.

Kirilenko and Petrova had been victims en route to both of these titles, but there was to be no repeat out on Grandstand. A polished display from the Russians - who committed just three unforced errors and converted three of their four break point opportunities - saw them run out 61 64 winners and progress to their third major quarterfinal together.

For the Williams sisters, it was just their eighth defeat in 112 Grand Slam doubles matches and only the third time in the past decade that they failed to make at least the quarterfinals.

Next up for Kirilenko and Petrova will be Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez after they edged past Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, 36 76(2) 75.

The Williams sisters were not the only former US Open winners to exit the tournament at the third round; No.5 seeds and 2010 champions Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova lost a surprisingly one-sided contest to Julia Goerges and Kveta Peschke, 64 62.

Goerges and Peschke's reward for their upset is a meeting with No.2 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci on Tuesday, while the other two quarterfinals see Hsieh Su-Wei and Anabel Medina Garrigues face Chuang Chia-Jung and Zhang Shuai and No.3 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka take on Sabine Lisicki and Peng Shuai.
