WTA Odds N' Ends... Vika Cruises In China
Victoria Azarenka

Breakthroughs, ranking movers and much more - every week wtatennis.com will be serving up a summary of stats in WTA Odds N' Ends...

Vika Victorious In Beijing
After capturing four titles in the season's first three months, Victoria Azarenka collected none over the next six and-a-half. But she got back into the winner's circle in spectacular fashion last week at the China Open, winning every match in straight sets, and in fact not losing more than four games in a set all week.
- Azarenka now trails Serena Williams by just one title for most on the WTA this season.
- Azarenka became the first player since the introduction of Premier Mandatory events in 2009 to win two in the same year, having also won Indian Wells in March.
- With her 13th career WTA title, 12 of them coming on hardcourts, Azarenka moved into a tie with Svetlana Kuznetsova for fifth place on the list of active players with the most WTA titles:
1. Serena Williams: 45
2. Venus Williams: 43
3. Maria Sharapova: 27
4. Caroline Wozniacki: 19
5t. Victoria Azarenka: 13
5t. Svetlana Kuznetsova: 13

- Azarenka passed Angelique Kerber for most match wins on the WTA this season:
1. Victoria Azarenka: 62
2. Angelique Kerber: 60
3. Agnieszka Radwanska: 57
4. Maria Sharapova: 56
5. Sara Errani: 54

- Her win in the final over World No.2 Maria Sharapova improved Azarenka to 5-8 against Top 2 players. Here are her victories:
d. No.2 Dinara Safina in '09 Indian Wells QF
d. No.1 Serena Williams in '09 Miami F
d. No.2 Kim Clijsters in '11 Miami QF
d. No.2 Maria Sharapova in '12 Indian Wells F
d. No.2 Maria Sharapova in '12 Beijing F

Russians Rule Beijing Doubles
Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina have had several strong showings at big events this year, including runs to the finals in Madrid and Rome. They finally went one round further in netting their first WTA title together at the China Open - beating Nuria Llagostera Vives and Sania Mirza in the final. Also during the week, they snapped Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears' 10-match win streak in the quarterfinals and eliminated No.2 seeds and fellow Russians Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova in the semifinals. Beijing was Makarova's second WTA doubles title and Vesnina's seventh.

Ranking Risers
- Serena Williams rose a spot to No.3, her highest rank since October 2010.
- Outside the Top 200 at the start of 2012, Yaroslava Shvedova climbed eight spots to a career-high No.28.
- Outside the Top 100 to start the year, Urszula Radwanska ascended three spots to a career-high No.29 while making her Top 30 debut.
- Anna Tatishvili went up two spots to a career-high No.50 in making her Top 50 debut.

WTA Championships Update
With Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Sara Errani and Li Na qualifying last week, all eight singles spots at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships - Istanbul 2012 have been secured. Only one spot remains in doubles, with Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova having a narrow lead over Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears for that berth. The Americans are in the draw this week in Osaka, while Kirilenko and Petrova are idle.
