Wozniacki Gets Her Halloween Revenge

SOFIA, Bulgaria - On a windy, windy day in Toronto last summer, Caroline Wozniacki struggled to find her rhythm and was sliced and diced off the court in her first match of the summer hardcourt season by Roberta Vinci in straight sets, 64 75, even though she led 5-1 in the second set with a slew of set points.
It was something like a horror movie for then-World No.1 Wozniacki...
But she got some Halloween revenge at the Qatar Airways Tournament Of Champions Sofia on Wednesday, handling the Italian's mix of power and spin perfectly and easing through their round robin match in 68 minutes, 63 61.
"It was a difficult match in the sense that I had to really keep focused," Wozniacki said afterwards. "She's not a player where you get a lot of rhythm, with the slice on the backhand and the flat forehand, so I had to make sure I was just focusing on my own serve and returns, and just kept pushing her."
Wozniacki has been No.11 since falling first round at the US Open - but she is now 16-2 since then and, if she either wins the title or reaches the final undefeated this week, she will inch back into the Top 10, replacing Marion Bartoli at No.10 (basically, she just needs to win two more matches this week).
But as always, Wozniacki's first focus is grinding out wins on the court.
"It would be great, but to be honest it's not really the big goal for me here," Wozniacki said. "I'm just very pleased about the way I'm playing. I'm really enjoying myself out there. I feel like I've found my game again and I'm playing the way I want to. And right now I'm just thinking of winning this tournament.
"I just have to take it one match at a time."
Speaking of one match at a time, the No.1-seeded Wozniacki's third and final round robin match will take place on Thursday against No.7 seed Daniela Hantuchova. Wozniacki leads Hantuchova in their head-to-head, 5-1.
"I'm playing against three completely different players this week," Wozniacki said. "Daniela plays very flat and deep and just goes for her shots. I just have to serve and return well and we'll see how it goes when we play tomorrow."
Vinci and Hsieh will also play on Thursday. As of now, Wozniacki is 2-0 in Group Serdika, Vinci an even 1-1, and Hantuchova and Hsieh 0-1.
