LONDON, England - Heather Watson and Laura Robson aren't just two of the WTA's brightest young stars, they're two of the UK's brightest young stars, and they got one of the biggest honors in the UK sports industry last week at the Sunday Times Sportswomen Of The Year Awards, held in London.

The Sportswomen Of The Year Awards began in 1988 and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by the UK's most prominent elite performers, coaches, administrators, community volunteers and inspirational female figures.

Watson and Robson were named the joint winners of Young Sportswoman Of The Year, and it only makes sense after both made big breakthroughs on the WTA this year: Robson struck first, making headlines around the world with her run to the fourth round of the US Open then reaching the final at Guangzhou, the first Brit in 22 years to reach a WTA final; Watson struck second, going all the way to the title in Osaka - the first Brit to win a WTA title in 24 years.

"It just feels kind of right that we are joint winners," Watson said. "I would have cheered for Laura going up to get it and she would have done the same for me. What we have is a friendly rivalry - we are very competitive and want to do better than the other on court, but we are also very supportive of one another."

The winner of the Sportswoman Of The Year award was Jessica Ennis, who brought the country to its feet at the London Olympics in the summer, winning the gold medal in the heptathlon - and her time in the 100m hurdles event in the heptathlon would have placed her fourth in the actual 100m hurdles event.
