MELBOURNE, Australia - Sam Stosur was recognized as Australia's most outstanding player on Monday night, receiving the Newcombe Medal at the Australian Tennis Awards, held at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne.

Stosur received the Newcombe Medal for the third straight year, which was fitting - she is the first Australian woman since Wendy Turnbull back in the '70s and '80s to finish in the year-end Top 10 on the WTA three years running.

"Receiving the Newcombe Medal for a third year in a row is an amazing honor," Stosur said. "This is a great occasion for the Australian tennis community to come together and celebrate our sport and recognize people's achievements and contributions to Australian tennis. I think it's great that the Australian tennis community continues to recognize the hard work of its members, who make the growth of our sport possible for the longevity of tennis in our country."

The other finalists for the award were Stosur's fellow WTA player Casey Dellacqua and ATP World Tour stars Marinko Matosevic and Lleyton Hewitt.

Named for Australian tennis legend John Newcombe, the Newcombe Medal is an annual recognition for the country's most outstanding elite player. Held in Melbourne, the Australian Tennis Awards recognizes service to tennis at all levels - club, coaches, players, volunteers, community and officials.

Stosur's breakthrough seasons came in 2010, when she reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, and 2011, when she won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. She finished both of those seasons at No.6 in the world; she didn't reach any Grand Slam finals in 2012 but she did make the semis of Roland Garros and the quarters of the US Open, and finished at No.9.

Turnbull had eight consecutive Top 10 finishes, from 1977 to 1984.
