AUCKLAND, New Zealand - The Top 2 seeds rolled through their opening matches at the ASB Classic on Tuesday, wrapping up the first round of the $500,000, International-level tournament.

No.1-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was the first of the power pair to advance, beating lucky loser Greta Arn - the 2011 champion in Auckland - in straight sets, 62 62, though it wasn't easy.

"The first match of the year is always hard, especially going from practicing indoors in the off-season to the conditions here," Radwanska said. "My opponent was very tough today, too. The score looks easy but the match was not easy - we had a lot of tight, long games. I really had to fight for every ball."

Radwanska, who is making her first appearance at the ASB Classic, had a lot of nice words for the tournament. "I really love it here," she said. "It's great you have a full crowd from the first round."

And the World No.4 and fan favorite's goal for the week? "It may be my first time here, but every time I go on the court I want to win - everything's good so far here, so why not go for the trophy?"

Julia Goerges, the No.2 seed in New Zealand this week, followed with a slightly tougher but still comfortable 63 64 win over tenacious Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in the feature night match.

"It's always nice to get a win, and to get one in two sets is very nice," Goerges said. "I expected a tough match from Anastasija and I got it. I think it's much better when you get tough matches at the start of a tournament, so you can really try to show what you've been working on."

Goerges isn't just a star on the singles court, a fixture in the Top 20 - she's also a fixture on the doubles court, and she has quite a popular partner lined up for the upcoming Australian Open.

"I'm playing with an Aussie - I'm playing with Sam Stosur," the German said. "I was going to play with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova this year but unfortunately she's injured, so I had to look for someone, and Sam and I decided to play. We've had some good doubles results before and have a lot of fun together - it's going to be fun at the Aussie Open, and to play with an Aussie there is even better."

No.6 seed Yaroslava Shvedova and No.8 seed Mona Barthel also won in straight sets, but No.5 seed Sorana Cirstea wasn't so lucky, dropping the first set to Heather Watson then retiring due to illness.

Marina Erakovic and Romina Oprandi wrapped up the first round matches for the week with a pair of straight set wins against qualifiers. The second round in Auckland starts on Wednesday.
