Stats Corner: Pre-Australian Open Dominators
Agnieszka Radwanska

MELBOURNE, Australia - Agnieszka Radwanska joined some rare company by capturing two of the pre-Australian Open events to kick off this season. That has only been done six times since the Grand Slam moved to its January place on the calendar in 1987. Here is how each of those players ended up doing in the Australian Open after their early-season success:

Pam Shriver: Won Brisbane and Sydney in '88; Lost in 4r of Australian Open
Natasha Zvereva: Won Brisbane and Sydney in '90; Lost in 2r of Australian Open
Justine Henin: Won Gold Coast and Canberra in '01; Lost in 4r of Australian Open
Anna Smashnova: Won Auckland and Canberra in '02; Lost in 1r of Australian Open
Elena Dementieva: Won Auckland and Sydney in '09; Lost in SF of Australian Open
Agnieszka Radwanska: Won Auckland and Sydney in '13; Into 2r of Australian Open so far

Radwanska and Smashnova are the only two players from the above list who came into Melbourne without dropping a set in their two pre-Australian Open tournament victories.

"For sure it has been a great two weeks for me, so I can't complain," Radwanska said after winning her Australian Open first round match. "And of course, I'm very happy that I could play a lot of good matches at a really high level without even losing one set."

And though it appears collecting two pre-Australian Open titles isn't necessarily a good omen for a deep run in Melbourne, winning one can be, as the following players secured one pre-Australian Open title and went on triumph at the season's first major:

Hana Mandlikova: Won Brisbane and Australian Open in '87
Monica Seles: Won Sydney and Australian Open in '96
Martina Hingis: Won Sydney and Australian Open in '97
Justine Henin: Won Sydney and Australian Open in '04
Victoria Azarenka: Won Sydney and Australian Open in '12

And these players won one pre-Australian Open event and were then runners-up in Melbourne:

Helena Sukova: Won Brisbane and lost in Australian Open final in '89
Jana Novotna: Won Sydney and lost in Australian Open final in '91
Martina Hingis: Won Sydney and lost in Australian Open final in '01
Martina Hingis: Won Sydney and lost in Australian Open final in '02
Justine Henin: Won Sydney and lost in Australian Open final in '06
Li Na: Won Sydney and lost in Australian Open final in '11
