PATTAYA CITY, Thailand - Hsieh Su-Wei's disappointing start to the season continued on Monday, as she suffered a first round defeat to Marina Erakovic at the PTT Pattaya Open.

Following early exits in Shenzhen, Hobart and the Australian Open, Hsieh was looking for fast start against Erakovic, and that is exactly what she got, breaking early for a 2-0 lead.

However, it was all downhill from then on for the No.3 seed, who was left chasing shadows for the next hour as she slumped to a 62 62 defeat.

Erakovic has had a difficult start to 2013 herself, winning just one main draw match and suffering a heartbreaking first round loss to Alizé Cornet in Melbourne. She had also lost her two previous meetings with Hsieh and was understandably pleased with how she adapted to the conditions.

"I felt like both of us started a little nervous because it was a first round," Erakovic said. "But, you know, I really tried to play aggressive and get used to the conditions and the court, and I think I did really well today, so I'm happy with myself.

"I played Su-Wei a long, long time ago at an ITF tournament in California so I really didn't know what to expect. I know she's a very tricky player and has some great shots, so I knew that I had to be really alert out there."

Next up for Erakovic is Thai wildcard Varatchaya Wongteanchai, after she scored a surprisingly easy 63 63 win over in-form German teenager Annika Beck. Also advancing to the second round were Alexandra Panova and Mathilde Johansson.

Tuesday will see several of the headline acts in action, including top seed Ana Ivanovic and defending champion Daniela Hantuchova. Ivanovic takes on Ayumi Morita, while Hantuchova meets Olga Puchkova.
