Winning Paris: A Good Omen?

The 16 winners of the first 20 editions of the Open GDF SUEZ in Paris all made it to No.7 or higher on the WTA Rankings - not such a bad omen for the winner of the 21st edition yesterday.

PARIS, France - In a draw that started with seven Top 20 players it was a No.45-ranked Mona Barthel who came out on top at the Open GDF SUEZ title in Paris last week. But that No.45 turned into a new career-high of No.28 this week, and if history is anything to go by, it could go to No.7 or higher...

All 16 champions in the previous 20 years of the Premier-level tournament were, had been, or would end up ranked in the Top 7 at one point in their careers, and 13 of those 16 players made it to the Top 3.
