BOGOTÁ, Colombia - The winners of four of the previous Copa Claro Colsanitas tournaments were in action on Tuesday, including 2005 champion and 2006 runner-up Flavia Pennetta.

The fifth-seeded Pennetta had been out of action since Montréal last August because of a right wrist injury that eventually required surgery. And sure enough, in her first match in over six months she came out rusty, falling behind to 2012 Bogotá runner-up Alexandra Panova, 64 32. However, Pennetta then showed off some of the form that previously took her to the Top 10 in the world and won 10 of the next 13 games for a 46 63 63 triumph.

Next up for the Italian is Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino. The Spaniard surely loves playing in Colombia, as she captured her lone WTA title here last year and just last week secured her first WTA 125K Series title in Cali. She was pushed in her opener here, but was a 62 16 63 winner over Colombian wildcard Yulia Lizarazo.

Another Spaniard who often shows off great form in Colombia is No.3 seed Lourdes Domínguez Lino, champion here in 2006 and 2011 and runner-up in 2005. She also took out a Colombian in three sets, recording a 36 62 61 defeat of Catalina Castaño.

Fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone looked like her eight-match WTA qualifying and main draw losing streak would reach nine against qualifier Sharon Fichman. But from 3-1 down in the third set, she won five of the next six games for a 46 64 64 victory in which she overcame 17 double faults.

In the day's longest match, No.8 seed Timea Babos survived Beatriz García Vidagany 64 16 76(4), in two hours, 44 minutes. The Hungarian faced two match points down 5-4 in the third set before rallying.

Two seeds did go down, with María-Teresa Torró-Flor topping sixth-seeded Arantxa Rus and Tereza Mrdeza beating seventh-seeded Pauline Parmentier.

No.1 seed Jelena Jankovic, No.2 seed Alizé Cornet and Schiavone are among those in action Wednesday. Interestingly enough, Jankovic already faced her first round foe - Julia Cohen - in doubles, pairing up with fellow Serb Aleksandra Krunic to beat Cohen and Tatjana Malek on Tuesday.
