BOGOTÁ, Colombia - Four of the five second round matches completed Thursday at the Copa Claro Colsanitas went three sets, including two that saw Italian seeds Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone eliminated.

Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino was up on the fifth-seeded Pennetta, 63 30, before Pennetta reeled off four straight games en route to taking the second set. However, the Spaniard rolled in a 23-minute third set that included a sequence in which she won 17 of 18 points. The 63 46 60 triumph made the defending champion and last week's victor in Cali 12-0 in WTA 125K Series and WTA events in Colombia.

Arruabarrena-Vecino next takes on another Italian, Karin Knapp, a 63 46 64 winner over No.3 seed Lourdes Domínguez Lino - the 2006 and 2011 Bogotá winner.

The thriller of the day belonged to Paula Ormaechea and the fourth-seeded Schiavone. The Argentine trailed Schiavone, 62 30, before winning six straight games to take the second set. However, Schiavone took a 4-1 lead in the third set and eventually went up 5-3. Again, Ormaechea rallied and pulled out a 26 63 76(3) win.

Ormaechea has guaranteed herself of at least matching her best WTA result - a quarterfinal appearance that also occurred in Bogotá last year. Her quarterfinal opponent is María-Teresa Torró-Flor, whom she just beat last week in Cali en route to the semifinals.

The one match that didn't go three sets saw No.1 seed Jelena Jankovic win four straight games down 3-2 in the first set and cruise from there for a 63 62 defeat of Mariana Duque-Mariño. That put Jankovic into a quarterfinal for the first time in her last eight events.

Awaiting the Serb is Romania's Alexandra Cadantu, a 46 63 64 winner over Tereza Mrdeza in two hours, 59 minutes.

In doubles, top-seeded Eva Birnerova and Alexandra Panova put themselves a win away from defending their title with a 62 61 semifinal rout of Elena Bogdan and Cadantu.
