INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Julia Goerges and Yaroslava Shvedova were one of two winning duos on a light day of first round doubles action Wednesday at the BNP Paribas Open.

In Goerges and Shvedova's only previous outing, they were runners-up in Auckland. They launched their Indian Wells campaign with a 62 76(1) defeat of Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova.

Goerges has four WTA doubles titles to her name, and Shvedova has seven, one of which came just last week in Florianopolis alongside Anabel Medina Garrigues. Shvedova's greatest success has come with Vania King, with whom she has four titles, including Wimbledon and the US Open in 2010.

Interestingly enough, Shvedova could play King and Monica Niculescu in the second round here if the American-Romanian duo gets past fourth-seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in their opener.

Also moving on were wildcards Jelena Jankovic and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The Serb-Croat combination were 62 62 winners over Eva Birnerova and Dominika Cibulkova, converting on five of 10 break point opportunities while saving 11 of 12 break point chances on their own serve.

Jankovic and Lucic-Baroni, who reached the third round of January's Australian Open in their only previous event together, next play the winner of No.3 seeds Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova.

Both Jankovic and Lucic-Baroni have fond memories of this event, with Jankovic having won the singles in 2010 and Lucic-Baroni having been a doubles semifinalist in 1998 with Martina Hingis.

The top-ranked duo in the world and the No.1 seeds, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, will be looking to extend their win streak to 15 matches when they take on Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi on Thursday. Second-seeded Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka also play their opener.
