International Women's Day is held every year on March 8 to celebrate women's achievements throughout history and across nations.

The day's origins date back to 1909, when the Socialist Party of America held a National Woman's Day to help support the battle against oppression and inequality. Two years later, International Women's Day was marked for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, and a century on it is now celebrated across the globe.

While the original focus was a movement towards gender equality and women's suffrage, the day has since evolved to become more than that.

It has become a day to celebrate women - their achievements and successes - as well as bring awareness to the progressions they've managed to accomplish thus far.

Fittingly, as the world's leading governing body for women's sport, the stars of the WTA (and a few friends from the 'other' side) were out in force on Twitter on Friday to celebrate International Women's Day 2013.
