Quotable Quotes: Serena Hits Miami
Serena Williams

MIAMI, FL, USA - Serena Williams made history last month, becoming the oldest player ever to reach No.1 in the world - now she is in Miami for the Sony Open Tennis, playing her first WTA event since achieving that feat. And she has a piece of history here too, one of only two players ever to win the prestigious Premier-level tournament five times, alongside her fellow WTA legend, Steffi Graf.

Williams plays her first match of the tournament during Thursday's day session, and it could be a tricky one - although Flavia Pennetta is just starting to build her momentum again after coming back from wrist surgery in February, and although she is 0-3 against Williams, the Italian has a lot of things going for her if history is anything to go by. One of Williams' wins came via retirement, and in their only meeting at this event, back in 2008, Pennetta led by a set and 3-0. The Italian also has two wins over reigning World No.1s, defeating Jelena Jankovic in 2008 and Caroline Wozniacki in 2011.

And coincidentally, Pennetta has her own piece of history alongside Graf - on Friday, October 7, 2011, she beat both World No.1s on the same day in Beijing, Wozniacki in singles and Liezel Huber in doubles. Graf is the only other player to achieve that, doing it on Monday, May 19, 1986, beating Martina Navratilova in singles and doubles in Berlin - Navratilova was No.1 in both disciplines.

Back to Miami, Williams met the press on Wednesday morning - here's just a taste of what she said...

On being No.1 again...
"Yes, it feels good to be on top, especially after everything, and working so hard and just not really expecting much, and especially this far in my career, it's exciting to be there again."

On going for a record-breaking sixth title in Miami...
"I just focus on every match that I play, from the first round to the last. I don't fear anybody, and I don't like that word. But I'm cautious of everyone - I think that's a better way to put it."

On the often windy conditions in Miami...
"It's not easy to adjust. It definitely gets really, really windy here, but fortunately enough I always have a good week to practice here. It was so windy last week I was just really barely able to hit.

"I thought the whole time it would be good preparation for this tournament."

On what drives her to keep going and keep coming back from injuries...
"I love playing tennis. I love walking out on center court. I love holding up the trophy at the end of the week. That's my goal. Whenever I get down or I'm injured, I think of that to get back and do better."

On how it feels to be back at this tournament...
"It feels great. For me it is a home tournament. I live so close to here. I have done pretty well here in the past, and it's always so many great memories every time I step out on the court."

On whether there's anything she's not so good at in life she would like to do better...
"I would love to sing really well. I think if I could sing, I would just be a star. But I don't sing great. I don't sing badly, but I don't sing great. I'm a karaoke singer - that's as far as I go."
