MIAMI, FL, USA - No.8 seeds Julia Goerges and Yaroslava Shvedova staged a remarkable recovery to defeat Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi in the first round of the Sony Open Tennis on Thursday evening.

For the best part of an hour, Goerges and Shvedova had no answer to an on-song Jurak and Marosi, slipping a set and a break behind. But, trailing 5-3, 40-15 in the second, their survival instincts belatedly kicked into gear, as they fended off five set points on their way to pinching the most improbable of sets.

The drama continued in the resulting match tie-break; Goerges and Shvedova twice opened up commanding leads, only to be pegged back on both occasions. Eventually, though, they dragged themselves over the line, closing out a 26 75 108 victory on their third match point.

There was no such escape for No.6 seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, who lost a bruising encounter to wildcards Lisa Raymond and Laura Robson. After breaking serve in the final game to take a close opening set, Raymond and Robson really found their range in the second, racing to a 75 62 win.

Also advancing were Daniela Hantuchova and Anabel Medina Garrigues, Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai and recent Bogotá champions Timea Babos and Mandy Minella.

On Friday, a number of the pre-tournament favorites will look to join them in the second round, with No.2 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka and the in-form Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in action.
