MIAMI, FL, USA - Top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci's perilous journey through the doubles draw at the Sony Open Tennis continued on Monday as they came from a set down to defeat Timea Babos and Mandy Minella.

Having come back from the brink against Kimiko Date-Krumm and Casey Dellacqua in the opening round, Errani and Vinci once again made life hard for themselves by dropping a see-saw opening set. However, the Italians, who finished runners-up 12 months ago, responded well, nicking a tight second set with a solitary break before rattling through the match tie-break.

Their reward for this battling 57 64 104 victory is a quarterfinal meeting with No.7 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza, who were given a similarly stern examination in their second round.

Fresh from a surprise first round loss to Samantha Stosur and Lisa Raymond in Indian Wells, Mattek-Sands and Mirza very nearly came unstuck against another big hitting duo, Sabine Lisicki and Jarmila Gajdosova.

Playing just their second match together, Lisicki and Gajdosova overcame a sluggish start to extend their fancied foes to a match tie-break.

Here, though, experience prevailed, Mattek-Sands and Mirza recovering from 6-5 down to close out a 61 36 107 win.

The final second round match saw wildcards Svetlana Kuznetsova and Flavia Pennetta follow up their upset of No.2 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, by swatting aside recent Indian Wells semifinalists Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, 62 62.
