- Williams became the 10th player with at least 50 career WTA titles and the only active one:

- It was Williams' seventh WTA clay court title, tying her for third-most among active players:

- Williams' defeat of Maria Sharapova in the final was her 12th straight win over the Russian and improved her to 13-2 in their series.

- Williams improved to 28-1 on clay since the start of last year's clay court season.

- Williams' 63 06 75 quarterfinal win over Anabel Medina Garrigues was just the seventh WTA match in which she lost a set 6-0 and just the second in which she ended up winning the match. The first was her 06 75 63 triumph over Justine Henin in the 2007 Miami final.

Accolades For Sharapova
Maria Sharapova achieved a couple of noteworthy feats en route to the Madrid final.

- With her semifinal victory over Ana Ivanovic, Sharapova became the eighth active player with at least 500 match wins:

Ranking News
- Madrid semifinalist Sara Errani moved up one spot to No.6, matching her career-high.
- Estrella Cabeza Candela climbed seven spots to No.95 in making her Top 100 debut. There are now eight Spaniards in the Top 100.
- Kristina Mladenovic ascended four spots on the doubles rankings to No.17, her Top 20 debut.
