Czechs Cruise In Doubles Opener

PARIS, France - No.2 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka shook off some recent struggles in a dominant first round performance on Thursday at their favorite Grand Slam, the French Open.

Hlavackova and Hradecka were surprise champions here in 2011 and made the semifinals in 2012 during a season in which they collected four WTA titles. But the Czechs took a 5-6 record in 2013 and a three-match losing streak into their opener against French wildcards Alizé Lim and Aravane Rezai.

Looking again like one of the WTA's most prolific duos, Hlavackova and Hradecka converted on six of eight break point chances in a 53-minute, 63 60 rout of Lim and Rezai that raised their Roland Garros record to 13-3.

In an upset, Irina-Camelia Begu and Magdalena Rybarikova were 16 62 75 winners over sixth-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears. The statistics revealed the tightness of the match, as first-time pairing Begu and Rybarikova won one more point than they lost, and both duos broke serve six times.

Those were the only matches involving seeded teams that were completed before rain suspended play. When action resumes Friday, No.1 seeds and defending champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci will be up a set but down a break to Lourdes Domínguez Lino and Garbiñe Muguruza and Vera Dushevina and Alexandra Panova will be up a set and on serve in the second set against No.11 seeds Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova.

Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova advanced to the second round when the Williams sisters withdrew because of a low back injury suffered by Venus Williams. Also, 13th-seeded Zhang Shuai and Zheng Jie reached the third round when Misaki Doi and Yaroslava Shvedova withdrew because of Shvedova's right arm injury.

No.3 seeds Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik and No.4 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina are among the teams scheduled to play second round matches on Friday.
