PARIS, France - No.4 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the second year in succession on Sunday with a hard-fought win over Jelena Jankovic and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

After relatively straightforward victories in their first and second round assignments, Makarova and Vesnina required the best part of two hours to wear down and eventually overcome their unseeded opponents, 76(4) 64.

Also advancing were fellow seeds and title rivals Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik, who ran out surprisingly comfortable 63 61 winners over Vania King and Monica Niculescu.

Petrova and Srebotnik, seeded No.3 this fortnight, arrived in Paris on the back of a fairly indifferent clay court season that had brought just two wins from three tournaments. However, they appear to be running into form at exactly the right time, conceding just 13 games thus far.

The doubles draw has been hit worse than most by the first week's rain, and while Petrova and Srebotnik were busy booking their spot in the last eight several teams were still in first and second round action.

Among those playing catch up were No.7 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza.

Twelve months ago, Mattek-Sands and Mirza fell at the opening hurdle, and they faced another potential banana skin first up this time in the form of French wildcards Alizé Cornet and Virginie Razzano. To the disappointment of the crowd on Court 1, this time there was to be no upset, Mattek-Sands and Mirza triumphing 63 64 to secure a meeting with Lauren Davis and Megan Moulton-Levy.
