Stats Corner: Italians Beating No.1s
Sara Errani

PARIS, France - Sara Errani recorded her first Top 10 win at last year's French Open, then her first Top 5 win on Tuesday at this year's French Open. So, the next big achievement for her would be her first win in seven tries over a World No.1 when she takes on Serena Williams in Thursday's semifinals.

Interestingly enough, if Errani is able to pull off the upset, it would be the seventh time an Italian upended a reigning World No.1. Here are the six instances in WTA Rankings history:

Event Result

'06 Fed Cup QF Schiavone d. Mauresmo 46 76(4) 64
'08 Dubai QF Schiavone d. Henin 76(3) 76(4)
'08 Zürich 2r Pennetta d. Jankovic 57 63 63
'11 Toronto 2r Vinci d. Wozniacki 64 75
