NEW YORK, NY, USA - After an absolutely legendary career as a professional tennis player, Monica Seles has shifted gears to storyteller with the release of her first novel, The Academy: Game On.

Inspired by the elite sports academy Seles attended as a teenager, The Academy is the start of a new series that follows a young tennis player and her fellow athletes at a school where there are only two ways in - amazing talent or deep pockets. Maya, the main character, moves from her small town to The Academy after earning a scholarship, but the reality of it all doesn't quite meet her fantasy.

Seles talked about the novel's main character, Maya: "The main character Maya is a scholarship kid, just like I was, though I was probably more awkward because I spoke very little English. Plus I had super short hair and was skinny as a rail, so other kids made fun of me, that I looked like a boy."

From Maya's rebel-punk, golf prodigy roommate Cleo to privileged swimmer Renee, to fellow tennis player Nicole and bad boy Jake, the drama doesn't stop in the first instalment of Seles' new series.

Published by Bloomsbury, The Academy: Game On is available anywhere books are sold.

Seles is one of the biggest legends of women's tennis, winning the 1990 French Open at age 16 and eventually collecting nine Grand Slam titles (four Australian Opens, three French Opens and two US Opens). She also spent 178 weeks as the No.1-ranked player in the world, the fifth-most all-time behind fellow WTA legends Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Martina Hingis.

Seles' memoir, Getting A Grip: On My Mind, My Body, My Self, was a New York Times bestseller.
