Serena Williams' spectacular season continued with her 16th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. The stats she is piling up this season and in her career are starting to defy belief. Among them:

- Williams improved to 16-4 in Grand Slam finals.

- Williams' WTA-leading sixth title of the year gave her 52 for her career, an Open Era list she is inching up on:

- Williams improved to 43-2 on the season, including 23-0 on clay.

- In the first World No.1 vs. No.2 Grand Slam final since the 2004 Australian Open and the first at Roland Garros since 1995, Williams won her 13th straight match against Maria Sharapova and improved to 14-2 in their series.

- Williams surpassed Sharapova for best Roland Garros win percentage among active players:
1. Serena Williams: .821 (46-10)
2. Maria Sharapova: .811 (43-10)
3. Svetlana Kuznetsova: .804 (41-10)
4. Ana Ivanovic: .778 (28-8)

- In winning her second title at Roland Garros, Williams became the French Open's first American champion there since she was triumphant in 2002.

Makarova & Vesnina Victorious
In a mild upset, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina dethroned defending champs Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the French Open doubles final. Among the statistics they achieved:

- Makarova and Vesnina did not drop a set en route to the title.
- Makarova and Vesnina recorded their first win in five tries against Errani and Vinci.
- Makarova and Vesnina improved to 20-4 on the season.
- Makarova and Vesnina picked up their fourth WTA doubles title as a duo and their second this season after Indian Wells. It also was Makarova's fifth WTA doubles title as an individual and Vesnina's 10th.
- The French Open was the first women's doubles Grand Slam title for both players, though Makarova did capture the 2012 US Open mixed doubles title with Bruno Soares.
- Makarova and Vesnina became just the second all-Russian duo to win a Grand Slam doubles title after Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva at the 2012 Australian Open.

Ranking News
- Former No.3 Victoria Azarenka and former No.2 Maria Sharapova switched spots after Sharapova fell one match short of defending her French Open title and Azarenka improved her French Open points by two matches in reaching the semifinals.
- French Open quarterfinalist Maria Kirilenko inched up two spots to No.10 in making her Top 10 debut and becoming the 11th Russian to ever crack the Top 10.
- Roberta Vinci ascended four spots to a career-high No.11. If she can move up one more spot, she will be the fourth Italian Top 10 player after Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta and Sara Errani.
- Kirsten Flipkens went up one spot to No.20 in making her Top 20 debut.
- Jamie Hampton jumped 12 spots to No.42 in making her Top 50 debut.
- Argentine No.1 Paula Ormaechea was the Top 100's biggest climber in skyrocketing 37 spots to No.81, her Top 100 debut.
- Caroline Garcia soared 15 spots to No.99 in making her Top 100 debut and becoming one of 11 teens in the Top 100.
- French Open doubles champ Ekaterina Makarova went up two spots to No.5 on the doubles rankings in making her doubles Top 5 debut.
