Cornet Wins Opener In Nürnberg

Alizé Cornet and Germans Julia Goerges, Annika Beck and Andrea Petkovic advanced on Tuesday at the NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP.

NÜRNBERG, Germany - Alizé Cornet continued her recent good form with a straight set first round win at the inaugural NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP.

Cornet's last two outings before this week resulted in her third WTA title at Strasbourg and a third round showing at the French Open in which she extended Victoria Azarenka to three sets, thus she came into Nürnberg with her highest ranking in almost four years at No.23. And on Tuesday she overcame a late rain delay to beat fellow Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier, 63 64, her eighth win in her last nine matches.

"It's always difficult to play against a countrywoman," Cornet said. "We are good friends. You have to forget this on the court and try to play your best.

"I had a really good first set and then I didn't start well in the second set and she started playing better. We were stopped by the rain at 5-4 on my serve after I had been up 5-2. That helped me relax and I was able to close it out when we resumed."

Three of the four Germans in first round action were victorious. No.4 seed Julia Goerges overcame two set points against her in the second set of her 64 75 triumph over Alexandra Cadantu, Annika Beck was a 62 62 winner over Nina Bratchikova and Andrea Petkovic recorded a 63 62 defeat of Sofia Arvidsson. It was an especially good day for the former World No.9 Petkovic, as she found out she was awarded a wildcard into Wimbledon.

"I'm really excited. My coach, my mother and me, we were jumping around," Petkovic said. "I'm just very thankful and grateful to Wimbledon that I got the wildcard. So, thumbs up for today - a great day."

The one German to go down was Dinah Pfizenmaier, who had a 62 51 lead over Karin Knapp before the Italian rallied for a 26 76(0) 75 win.

Also moving on was fifth-seeded Lucie Safarova, who withstood two set points against her in the second set tie-break of her 62 76(9) victory over Sesil Karatantcheva.

No.1 seed Jelena Jankovic was up a set on Arantxa Rus before play was suspended for the day. That first round match, the other three that didn't get underway and all eight second round matches are on Wednesday's schedule.
