Raymond & Robson Race Into Second Round

LONDON, England - Twenty-four hours after her singles heroics against Maria Kirilenko, Laura Robson was back on court on Wednesday afternoon to win her first round doubles match at the All-England Club.

It was standing room only out on Court 17 as Robson and partner Lisa Raymond delighted the British crowd by brushing aside Francesca Schiavone and Samantha Stosur, 63 61.

Raymond and Robson teamed up for the first time in Miami earlier this year, where they reached the final, leaving a trail of seeds in their wake. However, they arrived in south-west London on the back of a string of early exits, including first round losses in Birmingham and Eastbourne.

Despite this run, there was certainly no lack of confidence against Schiavone and Stosur, six-time major doubles champion Raymond's crisp volleying nicely complementing Robson's blistering returns.

It was one of these devastating groundstrokes that brought up match point after just over an hour on court, which she promptly sealed with a penetrating forehand down the line. In the second round they will meet No.7 seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke, who defeated Dominika Cibulkova and Monica Niculescu, 64 75.

Also advancing were several of the pre-tournament favorites, including top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci and last year's runners-up, Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Over the past 18 months, Errani and Vinci have established themselves as the team to beat on tour, lifting three of the past five majors. One of their few failures came at Wimbledon 12 months ago, where they lost in the quarterfinals.

They made a confident start this time around, though, racing past British wildcards Anne Keothavong and Johanna Konta, 63 61. Hlavackova and Hradecka were given a slightly sterner workout, eventually seeing off Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova, 75 62.

Other first round winners included Liezel Huber and Sania Mirza, Cara Black and Marina Erakovic and Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.
