BAKU, Azerbaijan - Elina Svitolina caused the latest upset at the Baku Cup when she knocked out No.2 seed Donna Vekic on Friday.

Following Bojana Jovanovski's surprise second round exit, Vekic was the highest-ranked player left in the draw, but she was no match for an inspired Svitolina, who reached her second career WTA semifinal with a 62 63 win.

The other came last week in Bad Gastein, where she was edged out in three tight sets by Andrea Hlavackova. This time around she will face Alexandra Cadantu, after she overcame a mid-match blip to defeat Galina Voskoboeva.

Cadantu made a lightning fast start, reeling off five straight games en route to taking the opening set. As the match progressed, though, the No.4 seed's serve began to waver, and Voskoboeva capitalized to edge a see-saw second set on the tie-break.

At the start of the decider, the momentum swung back again, Cadantu winning the first four games to take a stranglehold of the match. It was a grip she would not relinquish, and despite Voskoboeva wrestling one of the breaks back, Cadantu closed out a 63 67(3) 63 victory after two and a half hours on court.

On the other side of the draw, the tournament's surprise package, Magda Linette, booked her place in the last four in bizarre fashion.

For the best part of an hour, Linette appeared to be heading for defeat, as she was forced to play second fiddle to an on song Ons Jabeur. However, leading 63 41, Jabeur called for treatment on her right ankle. Three points later, and in obvious discomfort, she retired to send Linette into a semifinal with Shahar Peer, who had earlier overcome Tadeja Majeric, 60 64.
