CARLSBAD, CA, USA - It was close, but the first leg of Martina Hingis' doubles comeback came to an end at the Southern California Open on Friday, as she and Daniela Hantuchova fell in the quarterfinals.
Facing No.3 seeds Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, the wildcard pairing of Hantuchova and Hingis had all kinds of leads - they won the first set and were up 3-0 in the second set with three points for 4-0, also leading 4-2 a few games later and coming within two points of victory at 5-4. But it was the favorites who came through with the win, squeaking out that second set then winning seven points in a row from 2-all in the match tie-break to take complete control. The Americans won, 46 75 103.
Kops-Jones and Spears were coming off a title run at the Bank Of The West Classic in Stanford.
Hantuchova and Hingis will now head to Toronto for another Premier-level event, the Rogers Cup.
The only other doubles match of the day also ended in an upset, with Cara Black and Marina Erakovic fighting off two match points to beat No.2 seeds Liezel Huber and Nuria Llagostera Vives, 64 36 1210.
Both doubles semifinals at the Southern California Open will be played on Saturday.
