SUZHOU, China - Zhang Shuai maintained her summer upturn in form with a first round victory over Han Xinyun at the Caoxijiu Suzhou Ladies Open on Monday.

After leaving with the silverware on her last outing, at the ITF Circuit event in Beijing, Zhang has now won six matches - and 12 sets - in succession. The No.4 seed was made to work hard to preserve the latter statistic against Han, though, recovering from 5-1 down in the second set to register a 62 76(3) victory.

Meeting Zhang in the second round will be Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, who eased past Chan Chin-Wei, 61 62.

Meanwhile, in the top half of the draw there were wins for Tamarine Tanasugarn, Zarina Diyas and Lee So-Ra.

Former World No.19 Tanasugarn went into her opening match against Junri Namigata with just one win to her name all year. And despite racing through the opening set in under half an hour, number two did not come without a fight as she fended off a spirited fight back from Namigata before eventually prevailing, 61 46 63.

Diyas also overcame a mid-match blip to defeat Zhang Ling, 62 36 62, while Lee advanced when her opponent, Yang Zi, retired with muscle cramping when trailing, 76(3) 30.

Looking to join them in the second round will be top seed Timea Babos, Shahar Peer and Misaki Doi, who are among those kicking off their campaigns in eastern China on Tuesday.
