CINCINNATI, OH, USA - In a showdown featuring two current doubles World No.1s and a former doubles World No.1, reigning No.1s Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci were victorious to secure a quarterfinal berth at the Western & Southern Open.

Errani and Vinci's 64 64 defeat of Daniela Hantuchova and Martina Hingis on Wednesday may have looked routine on paper, but it was far from it. Hantuchova and Hingis got out to a 4-2 first set lead before Errani and Vinci reeled off four straight games to take the set. Then, Errani and Vinci jumped out to a 5-1 second set lead before Hantuchova and Hingis came charging back to get within 5-4 until Errani and Vinci closed it out on their fifth match point.

"Martina was playing unbelievably," Errani said. "It was not easy. We played a very good match today and I'm very happy that we won."

Interestingly enough, Errani and Vinci play each other in the third round of singles on Thursday.

As for Hingis and Hantuchova, three tournaments into Hingis' doubles comeback, they have won their first match and lost their second each time.

"We started off really well," Hingis said. "In Carlsbad, we played a great first match. Second match, being up a set and 4-2 against one of the top teams, Kops-Jones and Spears.

"We definitely had our opportunities today. Hopefully, soon we'll take advantage of those chances."

Hingis said she and Hantuchova's losses have come down to a few key points.

"I feel like right now we have the level of being able to play with and beat the best out there," Hingis said. "It would be nice to beat one of those teams, which you have to be able to do to have the confidence to win tournaments."

Next up for Errani and Vinci are Julia Goerges and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who upset the Italians in the third round of Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Also among those winning second round matches were No.2 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, No.3 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai in their first match since their Wimbledon triumph, No.6 seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke, No.7 seeds Chan Hao-Ching and Katarina Srebotnik and Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic, who overcame a match point in upsetting No.4 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lisa Raymond.
