CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Julia Goerges and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova have yet to win a WTA title together, yet now are 2-0 against doubles World No.1s Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci after a quarterfinal victory at the Western & Southern Open on Thursday.
Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova first played the Italians in the third round of Wimbledon earlier this summer, pulling off the upset in three sets. Their clash in Cincinnati was even tighter, with Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova falling being 5-1 in the match tie-break, rallying to within 9-7 and then reeling off four straight points for the 46 62 119 win.
"The match tie-break was really dramatic, as we were two match points down," Goerges said. " We came back with two great shots at 9-7 down. Overall, we are pretty pleased with the way we played. It's the No.1 team in the world and a great win for us."
Next up for Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova are No.6 seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke, who also survived a thriller. Groenefeld and Peschke overcame three match points down 9-6 in the match tie-break en route to a 61 26 1210 defeat of Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic.
Groenefeld and Peschke should like their chances against fellow German-Czech duo Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova, as they have a 3-0 lead in their series.
Friday's other semifinal will see second-seeded Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina take on third-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai. From 5-2 down in the second set of their quarterfinal against Liezel Huber and Nuria Llagostera Vives, the Russians ran off five straight games for a 62 75 triumph. And Hsieh and Peng were 63 62 victors over seventh-seeded Chan Hao-Ching and Katarina Srebotnik for their eighth win in a row and 14th in their last 15 matches.
