NEW HAVEN, CT, USA - No.7 seed Sabine Lisicki weathered an early storm from Kristina Mladenovic to reach the second round of the New Haven Open at Yale.

In Sunday's only main draw singles match, Lisicki defeated Mladenovic, 75 61.

"Tough draw, but this is great preparation for New York," the seventh-seeded Lisicki said. "I wanted to get some momentum. That's why I'm here. I want to win as many matches as possible. I think it's going to be a fun week.

"I have never been to New Haven. I was really looking forward to it, because I'd heard a lot of good things about it. It's really nice. I feel good here."

Lisicki commented on the right wrist injury that she first suffered at the All-England Club and which kept her out of action until last week.

"At a Grand Slam, you give it everything you have no matter what's happening, and that's what I did," Lisicki said. "I needed a bit more time than I wanted to take care of it, but that's the way it is. I got to play my first final at a Grand Slam, so it was worth it."

Lisicki also reflected on that memorable fortnight.

"I loved every second that I could be on the court there," Lisicki said. "The final is even more special than at the other Grand Slams, starting with the walk on court with flowers. Someone else carries your bag. All those little things make a difference. I love all the traditions. It's just amazing and I think I'll learn a lot from that experience.

"It gives me a huge amount of confidence and shows that the hard work is paying off. I've had to go through some tough patches in the past with injuries. But to get all that support from the crowd was just the best feeling in the world."

Also Sunday, Alison Riske, Ayumi Morita, Stefanie Voegele, Monica Puig, Karin Knapp and Anna Schmiedlova secured main draw berths with qualifying wins.

All the rest of the first round matches will be played Monday, with No.3 seed Petra Kvitova and No.4 seed and four-time New Haven champion Caroline Wozniacki among those in action.
