NEW HAVEN, USA - Petra Kvitova fired a warning shot to her rivals for the upcoming US Open with a comprehensive victory over Klara Zakopalova in the semifinals of the New Haven Open at Yale.

Having been taken the distance in her three matches this week - and her previous six on tour - defending champion Kvitova was in no mood to hang about against her Fed Cup teammate. A trademark inside out forehand earned her an early break in the first set before taking full control a few games later with a delicate drop shot.

When she broke to love for a 2-0 lead in the second, the end started to look like just a matter of time, and so it proved, Kvitova closing out a 60 61 win after just 50 minutes on court.

"I think the beginning of the match was pretty close," Kvitova said. "Klara had chances to win the first game and the next game when she was serving. I think that was the turning point.

"I was saying to myself, I need to stay focused in the first set and play really well because I know she can come back anytime and I need to be ready for it.

"It was nice to finally have a two-setter. I was asked in a press conference this week if I prefer shorter matches short match. And I said, 'Of course, I prefer shorter matches but it's not always up to me!'"

Kvitova has never defended a WTA title in her career. If she is to alter this statistic over the weekend she will have to beat the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep.

"I don't think I've played Simona before," Kvitova added. "I know that she's a very good mover, like Caroline, so I can't say who will win tonight. It'll be a surprise for me."

Kvitova met Wozniacki in Cincinnati last week, losing in three sets, despite holding a break advantage in the decider. "I know Caroline well. We played in Cincy last week. It was in three sets, of course! So it will be nice to reach in the final against Caroline, but I don't mind who I meet tomorrow."
