WTA Odds N' Ends: Simona's Sweet Week
Simona Halep

A year that was already by far the best of her career got even better for Simona Halep last week with her first Premier-level title at the New Haven Open at Yale.

- Halep's fourth WTA title of her career was also her fourth this season, second most on the WTA behind Serena Williams' eight.
- Her first WTA hardcourt title made Halep the only player with a WTA title on all three surfaces this season.
- Halep's defeats of Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals and Petra Kvitova in the final were her fourth and fifth Top 10 wins, respectively.
- Halep became New Haven's first Romanian champion.
- Halep improved to 25-3 since June, with her other titles during that span coming in Nürnberg, 's-Hertogenbosch and Budapest.

Doubles News
In their fourth outing as a duo, Sania Mirza and Zheng Jie picked up their first WTA title in New Haven with a victory over Anabel Medina Garrigues and Katarina Srebotnik in Saturday's final.

This was Mirza's 17th WTA doubles title, three of them coming this year, and Zheng's 15th. Mirza and Zheng each had already won New Haven once previously, Mirza with Mara Santangelo in 2007 and Zheng with Yan Zi in 2006.

Also in New Haven, Srebotnik become the fourth active player to surpass 500 WTA doubles wins:
1. Lisa Raymond: 809
2. Liezel Huber: 632
3. Cara Black: 618
4. Katarina Srebotnik: 502

Rankings Risers
- New Haven champ Simona Halep went up four spots to a career-high No.19 in making her Top 20 debut. She also surpassed No.22 Sorana Cirstea as the top-ranked Romanian.
- Alison Riske was the Top 100's biggest climber in going from No.95 to No.81.
