NEW YORK, NY, USA - Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka faced some early resistance from some big-hitting opponents but managed to move into the third round of the US Open in straight sets.

The No.1-seeded Williams was the first of the pair to move through, seemingly evenly matched against Galina Voskoboeva at 4-3 in the first set but completely pulling away to cruise through, 63 60.

"I'm just trying to do the best I can - just always trying to get a little better," Williams said.

Next up for Williams is Yaroslava Shvedova, who beat Austrian lucky loser Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, 62 63. Williams has beaten Shvedova in both previous meetings, though the last one was very close.

The No.2-seeded Azarenka had one especially tricky patch over on Louis Armstrong Stadium, dropping three straight games from 5-0 up in the first set before finally closing the set out, 6-3; she never really looked back from there though, closing out Aleksandra Wozniak without any more drama, 63 61.

"It was a good match, I think," Azarenka said. "It was very good and solid beginning of the first set, and good second set. Towards the end I felt like I let her play a little bit and she really went for her shots, so I had to adjust a little bit better, and it took a little bit longer, but I'm glad that I closed out the first set.

"I was really more dominating in the second."

One of the main lines of questioning in Azarenka's post-match press conference had to do with the off-court side of things - namely what the World No.2's favorite spot in New York City to get food was.

"Whole Foods. My favorite spot in the city," she said. "It's easy. You can get absolutely everything. But my all-time favorite was a Tower Restaurant, Asian cuisine. But I can't have any of that now.

"But Whole Foods is like Disneyland for me. I love it," Azarenka continued, "I just look through all the stuff there, all the crackers, all the nuts, whatever, fruits - just try some different things. Also the deli section is very good. It's always fresh, homemade, organic - it's important for me to have good food."

Next up for Azarenka is No.26 seed Alizé Cornet, who beat Croatian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets, 62 62. Azarenka has beaten Cornet in both of their previous meetings, though - like Williams and Shvedova - their last one was tight, going to three sets at this year's French Open.

"I think it's a different match, for sure," Azarenka said. "Alizé is a great player with a lot of experience. She's been Top 20 before. It looks like she's improving much better this year. We had a tough match at the French Open, and I'm really looking forward to play against her again here at the US Open.

"She's highly motivated - it's going to be a great match."
