Beck Reaches First WTA Final

After requiring over three hours to see off Piter, Beck's semifinal was cut short a little over the hour mark when her opponent, Stefanie Voegele, was forced to retire with a thigh injury at the start of the second set.
Having called for the trainer at the end of the first set, the injury brought Voegele's tournament to an end soon after. And while the manner of victory may not have been to her liking, Beck, leading 75 10 at the time, was understandably excited to be through to her first WTA final.
"I'm very happy to be through the semis and into my first WTA final," Beck said. "We were both tired I think - I had a very tough match against Katarzyna yesterday - and struggled at the beginning.
"When she went off for her medical timeout, I called my coach and just tried to stay focused because I wanted to start the second set well. It's a bit disappointing she had to retire because I didn't want to reach my first final like that."
"It's going to be interesting. Caroline has been to a Grand Slam final and has a lot of confidence in her game," Beck, who will be facing Wozniacki for the first time, added. "I'm just going to have some fun out there tomorrow, do my best and try to play aggressive like I have all this week. Let's see what happens tomorrow, but I hope I can give a surprise to the spectators!"
If she is to spring the surprise she will need to find a way to pierce Wozniacki's famed defense, which was as watertight as ever against Lisicki.
A break in the seventh game proved the difference in the first set, before Wozniacki took full control with a run of four unanswered games at the start of the second. Lisicki rallied, pulling back one of the breaks, but despite a few late jitters the Dane was not to be denied.
"Sabine is a great player - she hits the ball very hard, plays very aggressively and serves well - so I knew this was going to be a very tough match for me," Wozniacki said. "I started off well, getting a lot of returns back and even when she came back from 5-1 in the second I don't think my level dropped and thankfully I managed to find some good serves at the end."
