Yanina Wickmayer overcame a stomach bug and a stubborn opponent to reach the second round of the OEC Taipei WTA Ladies Open on Tuesday.

TAIPEI, Chinese Taipei - No.2 seed Yanina Wickmayer saw off a spirited challenge from local qualifier Chan Chin-Wei to reach the second round of the OEC Taipei WTA Ladies Open on Tuesday.

An under the weather Wickmayer struggled to consistently find her best tennis but eventually managed to subdue World No.325 Chan to triumph, 76(3) 64.

"It was tough for me because I wasn't feeling very well and it wasn't easy to get myself pumped up and have enough energy to win," Wickmayer, who was suffering from a stomach bug, said after the match. "But I'm happy I'm through and hopefully I'll feel better in the next few days."

Meeting Wickmayer next will be Olga Govortsova, who battled for nearly two and a half hours and saved two match points before overcoming Chinese wildcard Wang Qiang, 64 57 75.

Govortsova has played sparingly since reaching the final in Tashkent two months ago in an attempt to overcome a nagging shoulder injury, and she was given a thorough workout by both Wang and the carpet courts of the Taipei Arena.

"When we got into the third set my whole body felt tired - not just my shoulder, but my knee and everything - it was tough," Govortsova said.

"The surface is so different - we usually play on hardcourts or clay courts - which also made a difference and maybe made me feel more tired."

Another player given ample opportunity to get used to the surface was Anna Schmiedlova, who won a tense battle with No.6 seed Caroline Garcia, 67(3) 61 75. No.5 seed Kurumi Nara also failed to clear the first hurdle, losing to Anna-Lena Friedsam, 63 75.
