Stats Corner: Newcomer Of Year, And Then...
Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard was announced as the WTA's Newcomer Of The Year on Wednesday after a season that saw her make her first WTA final in Osaka, to go along with semifinal showings in Strasbourg and Québec City. In fact, after going from No.144 to No.32 over the last 12 months, she concluded the season as the WTA's top-ranked teen.

So, will Bouchard's ranking continue to soar in 2014? Based on the history of Newcomer Of The Year winners, there's a good chance - as 24 of the 36 saw their year-end ranking improve the following year:

2009: Petra Kvitova No.34 No.2 +32
2012: Laura Robson No.53 No.46 +7

While a Newcomer Of The Year improving their ranking the following year is fairly common, going all the way to Grand Slam glory is quite rare, as only three have done so:

Newcomer Of Year Slam Title
1998: Serena Williams 1999 US Open
2003: Maria Sharapova 2004 Wimbledon
2010: Petra Kvitova 2011 Wimbledon

Note: In addition to the three players above, Tracy Austin, Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Conchita Martínez, Jennifer Capriati, Iva Majoli, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Svetlana Kuznetsova also went on to capture Grand Slam titles, but not the very next year after winning Newcomer Of The Year.
