ACAPULCO, México - WTA and ATP World Tour rising stars Eugenie Bouchard and Grigor Dimitrov took part in an exciting stunt organized by the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, riding a helicopter and a yacht, and then playing some mini-tennis on a very special court built in the middle of Acapulco Bay.
"It was an amazing experience," Bouchard said. "We got to fly the helicopter to the bay, first of all, and then we got to take this yacht to the court. I've never played tennis on water before, so now I can say I did that! Grigor and I played a few points and it was really hot out there, so we were just like, 'Let's jump in.' We really had so much fun - it's probably the best tournament activity I've ever done!"
Not only had Bouchard never played tennis on water before, she had never been in a helicopter before.
"It was my first time in one," she said. "I'd never experienced it before, and they opened the doors as well, so it was a bit scary! But it was so beautiful seeing all the buildings and all of the mountains.
"I don't think we've thought about the tournament for the past hour or two. We were just thinking about helicopters and boats. It was so fun. I feel really lucky to do things like this as part of my job.
"It's an experience I'll never forget, and both Grigor and I had a really fun time today."
Bouchard and Dimitrov are their respective tours' brightest young stars. The No.19-ranked Bouchard is the youngest player in the WTA's Top 30, while the No.22-ranked Dimitrov is the youngest player in the ATP World Tour's Top 60. They both had breakthrough runs at the Australian Open, Bouchard reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal and Dimitrov reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
