Indian Wells Notebook: Genie Hangout
Eugenie Bouchard

INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - There's a new phenomenon in the how-to-interview-a-tennis-player handbook. The hangout.

It all began at Rafa Nadal's house in Wimbledon two years ago, when a select few fans were invited to pose questions to the then-World No.1 by video link. It made for many entertaining expressions.

Fast forward to the BNP Paribas Open here at Indian Wells, and the WTA's Genie Bouchard, she of Australian Open semifinals and stuffed animals fame, had volunteered to take questions from her fans in a live video environment.

"I am nervous, I don't know what's going to happen right now," she laughed at the start.

But Bouchard doesn't have a lot to be nervous about at the moment, not really. The WTA newcomer of 2013 is enjoying being part of the main draw here at Indian Wells for the first time.

"It's been a good 12 months I'd say, last time I was here I lost in the first round of qualifying, so little different. I feel lucky to be able to call this my job. I'm proud of the improvements I've made."

The first question was about goals, and Bouchard admits that she is not shy about aiming high, with one of her targets being to reach the WTA Championships in Singapore.

"I want to focus on improving, the performance will come, the ranking will come. But Top 10 is definitely a goal," she said.

"I went to Singapore earlier to promote it, it's a cool city, it looks like it will be a great 10-day tennis party thing. But that's top eight. It will be tough."

Having said that, if given the choice, she would choose Roger Federer, self-described as "her biggest idol", to play mixed doubles with, the conversation then moved onto more entertaining parts of life.

Explaining that she listens to Miley Cyrus and Kanye West as well as fellow Canadian Justin Bieber to get her feet moving before a match, an interesting revelation (which yours truly certainly did not know), is that she is a quarter Irish.

"Ireland is actually somewhere I really want to go," she said. "Maybe around Wimbledon time."

Next up was what her three wishes would be, if she were, in fact, a genie.

"I would want to live on an island.

"I would want to win 20 Grand Slams.

"I would like to go to every country in the world."

Pretty reasonable wishes.
