INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - The first doubles quarterfinal at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday featured an upset in the form of Lucie Hradecka and Zheng Jie knocking off No.4 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik.

Hradecka and Zheng each have impressive doubles résumés. Hradecka has 17 WTA doubles titles to her credit, including two Grand Slams alongside fellow Czech Andrea Hlavackova. Zheng has 15 WTA doubles titles, and also is a two-time Grand Slam winner alongside fellow Chinese Yan Zi. However, this is Hradecka and Zheng's first event together and the partnership almost didn't come to fruition.

"We were going to play with other partners and with 30 minutes left until the deadline, we decided to play together," Zheng said. "And now we're into the semifinals. We're so happy."

It looked like the decision to team up may not have been a wise one initially, as they lost the first set of their opener against Vania King and Galina Voskoboeva, 6-0. However, they rallied to win that one and then were triumphant in straight sets against Vera Dushevina and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Monday.

But with only three victories under their belt, they were certainly the underdogs against 2010 Indian Wells champions Peschke and Srebotnik, who came into Tuesday's contest with 125 victories together. Nevertheless, after falling in a 4-1 first set hole the eighth-seeded Hradecka and Zheng rallied to win the set and eventually the match, 75 57 103.

The remaining three quarterfinals will be played Wednesday, with No.1 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai and defending champs Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina among the competitors.
