Azarenka Withdraws From Miami

Victoria Azarenka, a two-time champion at the Sony Open Tennis, has been forced to withdraw from her beloved Premier Mandatory-level tournament because a nagging left foot injury.

MIAMI, FL, USA - Victoria Azarenka, who has enjoyed some of the best moments of her career at the Sony Open Tennis, has been forced to withdraw from the event because of a left foot injury.

"I am very sad not to be able to compete at this year's Sony Open Tennis in Miami," Azarenka said. "I love playing in the US and my results in the past were also great. But it's now been over a year that it seems bad luck has been following me. I couldn't play in Miami last year with a problem in my ankle and now this with my foot. It is time for me to think about my recovery and I will work hard for that.

"I wish the tournament all the best for this 2014 edition," she added. "Miami is an amazing place and a great tournament. I hope to be there next year fully recovered and able to be competing for the title."

After falling to Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where she was two-time defending champion, Azarenka didn't play again until Indian Wells because of the left foot injury. Clearly hindered in her movement, she dropped her opening match at Indian Wells to Lauren Davis.

Azarenka won her first Premier-level title at Miami in 2009 (beating Serena Williams in the final) and repeated as champion in 2011 (beating Maria Sharapova in the final). It's one of three tournaments she has won twice - also the Australian Open and Doha twice, in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.
