MIAMI, FL, USA - What better time to celebrate 30 years of women's tennis in Miami than after the second round thriller between Angelique Kerber and Peng Shuai on Thursday - after that grinder, which Kerber won from 5-2 down in the third set, the WTA honored the Sony Open Tennis' big anniversary.

Kerber and the Executive Vice President of the WTA, Laurence Applebaum, presented Sony Open Tennis Tournament Director Adam Barrett with a commemorative gift in an on-court ceremony.

"For 30 years now, the Sony Open has made an outstanding contribution and investment to women's tennis," Applebaum said of the milestone. "They put on a fantastic event in Crandon Park year after year and have the most incredible fans. It's a highlight on the schedule and a true player favorite."

The Sony Open Tennis made its debut on the calendar in 1985 and has grown to become one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, one of only four Premier Mandatory-level events alongside the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid and China Open in Beijing.

The tournament boasts a legendary honor roll of champions as well - 26 of the previous 29 editions of the tournament have been won by players who were, had been or would become World No.1s - six-time champion Serena Williams, five-time champion Steffi Graf, three-time champion Venus Williams, two-time champions Monica Seles, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka, and - definitely last but not least - one-time winners Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

The other three champions weren't far off from No.1 - 1989 champion Gabriela Sabatini, 2006 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and 2012 champion Agnieszka Radwanska (No.3, No.2 and No.2).
