Domínguez Lino Wins Bogotá Opener
Teliana Pereira

BOGOTÁ, Colombia - Lourdes Domínguez Lino continued her trend of success at the Claro Open Colsanitas with a first round triumph over Teliana Pereira on Monday.

Both of Domínguez Lino's WTA titles came here, in 2006 and 2011, to go along with a runner-up showing in 2005. But it would have been understandable if she came into this week with shaken confidence - having lost 60 60 for the first time in a WTA main draw match last week in Charleston at the hands of eventual champion Andrea Petkovic.

However, from 2-1 down in the first set against 2013 Bogotá semifinalist and Brazilian No.1 Pereira, the eighth-seeded Domínguez Lino won five straight games and then from 3-2 down in the second set she won four of the next five games for a 62 64 victory. This is the Spaniard's 15th straight year of playing in the qualifying or main draw at this event, where she has now won 22 matches.

"I played well," Domínguez Lino said. "I tried to play my game and I'm happy with the result.

"I like this country. I love the people, the altitude, everything."

Another of last year's Bogotá semifinalists, third-seeded Karin Knapp, also was beaten. The Italian fell to Chanelle Scheepers, 63 76(4).

"I was 63 41 up and then she started playing really well," Scheepers said. "She started hitting her forehand pretty big. Then I was just trying to stay ahead and finish the second set. I'm glad to have gotten through in two sets.

"It was a tough match. Tough conditions to get used to. But it was the same for both of us. I'm just trying to play consistent, get a lot of balls back and get used to it as quickly as possible."

Next up for Scheepers is 2012 Bogotá runner-up Alexandra Panova. The Russian's 61 46 62 victory over Kristina Mladenovic on Monday was her third straight in their series and her first WTA main draw match win of the year.

Also advancing was sixth-seeded Vania King, a 61 75 winner over Tadeja Majeric.

Securing main draw berths with qualifying wins were Nicole Gibbs, Lara Arruabarrena, Sachia Vickery and Florencia Molinero. Interestingly enough, after losing in qualifying to Vickery, Irina Khromacheva made the main draw as a lucky loser when Sharon Fichman withdrew. And the 18-year-old Russian took advantage of her good fortune by defeating Olivia Rogowska, 62 62, for her first WTA main draw match win.
