BOGOTÁ, Colombia - Jelena Jankovic got her Claro Open Colsanitas title defense started by overcoming a very game opponent to wrap up the first round on Wednesday.

Jankovic captured her first WTA title in over three years last year in Bogotá and is seeded first here this year. However, Mathilde Johansson gave her a stiff test before eventually falling short, 75 75.

"The conditions are a little bit different from what I played in last week and throughout the year," Jankovic said. "It's high altitude, so the ball was really flying off my racquet. And not a little out, but one or two meters out. I only came here three days ago, so that's not enough to get used to it and feel comfortable. But I was fighting hard and was trying to stay strong even when I wasn't playing well. I managed to get through, so hopefully I'll get better and better with each match."

Jankovic had kind words to say about her opponent, whom she was playing for the first time.

"She played very well under these conditions," Jankovic said. "She was hitting the ball much better than I did. I was fighting well but I wasn't striking the ball very well, so I was lucky to break serve at the end and finish the match."

A couple of other former champions here secured quarterfinal spots, as 2010 Bogotá champ Mariana Duque-Mariño was a 62 64 winner over Irina Khromacheva, and No.8 seed and 2006 and 2011 titlist Lourdes Domínguez Lino was a 62 63 victor over Yuliana Lizarazo. Interestingly enough, Domínguez Lino won by the exact same score later in the day alongside fellow Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja to book a doubles semifinal berth.

Also triumphant in their second round matches were sixth-seeded Vania King and Chanelle Scheepers.

The second round continues on Thursday, highlighted by an encounter between 2012 Bogotá champion Lara Arruabarrena and 2013 Bogotá runner-up Paula Ormaechea and Jankovic's match against Sofia Shapatava. Jankovic is looking to defend a title for the second time, having also won Rome in 2007 and 2008.
